Preserve your Outdoor Fountain

Water fountains are made to create the feel of natural surroundings of water falling through a stream.  They consist of a reservoir and a basin.  Outdoor fountains are usually kept in the garden area or entranceway to catch the visitors’ eye.  Outdoor fountains work on a jet pump.  The pump is the most important part of the fountain since it is responsible for moving water through the fountain.  To keep this mechanism working properly, it needs proper maintenance on a weekly or monthly basis, depending on how much debris it catches.  Water fountains offer benefits such as purifying the air and maintaining a natural environment.  Below are a few maintenance points for proper functioning of the fountain:

Inspect Your Fountain

When you first purchase a fountain for your outdoor garden, take a few minutes to inspect and learn its inner workings.  It is best to maintain the recommended water level in the basin so that the flow of water will be at optimum level to help maximize the life of water pump.  Remove debris, rotten plants, leaves and branches that fall in the fountain to avoid the pump jamming up on you.

Read the Instruction Manual

When you buy an outdoor or indoor fountain there is usually an instruction booklet that comes with the fountain, which will give instructions as to how to handle and clean it.  It is recommended that you wash the fountain with a clean cloth or use some natural solvents to clean the dust particles from the fountain.  This also brings some shine to the fountain.  Tough and hard cleansers on your water fountain can affect the original look and colors of the fountain.

Because of the continuous running of the fountain the motor may begin to make a high pitch sound.  If this occurs, check to see if the motor is properly inserted in the reservoir.  Maintain proper water level height to avoid irregular splashing of the water in the basin.  You can also control this by putting small rocks and pebbles over the basin.
